Human and Animal Pathogens in Manure

چکیده

Fecal wastes from domestic animals, wildlife and humans are applied to the soil surface and to varying extents are incorporated into the soil. These fecal wastes can also enter water systems by direct contamination of the water or through seepage or surface runoff. Humans contaminate water sources through poorly processed sewage effluents, malfunctioning septic tanks and seepage from sanitary landfills. Domestic and wild animals contaminate water by defecation in unprotected surface water, through runoff and as a result of seepage of water through soil that contains an excessive amount of animal feces. A wide variety of pathogenic viruses, bacteria and parasites may be found in the feces of wild and domestic animals and humans. Also, nonpathogenic bacteria and parasites are found in large numbers in the feces of animals as well as soil and water. Only a small number of animal pathogens in feces, water and soil have the potential to infect humans and domestic animals (Table 1). These are the pathogens that are of great concern to the public, who are usually exposed to these animal pathogens through consumption of fecal contaminated food or water.

Fate and transport of zoonotic, bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens during swine manure treatment, storage, and land application.

Members of the public are always somewhat aware of foodborne and other zoonotic pathogens; however, recent illnesses traced to produce and the emergence of pandemic H1N1 influenza virus have increased the scrutiny on all areas of food production. The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology has recently published a comprehensive review of the fate and transport of zoonotic pathogens that...

Evaluation of Fecal Indicators and Pathogens in a Beef Cattle Feedlot Vegetative Treatment System.

Runoff from open-lot animal feeding areas contains microorganisms that may adversely affect human and animal health if not properly managed. One alternative to full manure containment systems is a vegetative treatment system (VTS) that collects runoff in a sediment basin and then applies it to a perennial vegetation (grass) treatment area that is harvested for hay. Little is known regarding the...

An analysis of human pathogens found in horse/mule manure along the John Muir Trail in Kings Canyon and Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks.

OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of microorganisms that are potentially pathogenic for humans in horse/mule manure along the John Muir Trail (JMT). METHODS Random samples of horse/mule manure were collected along sections of the JMT in Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia national parks (NP), as well as in portions of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and selected JMT/PCT access trails. Conve...

Influence of Chicken Manure Fertilization on Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria in Soil and the Endophytic Bacteria of Pakchoi

Animal manure is commonly used as fertilizer for agricultural crops worldwide, even though it is believed to contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance from animal intestines to the soil environment. However, it is unclear whether and how there is any impact of manure fertilization on populations and community structure of antibiotic-resistant endophytic bacteria (AREB) in plant tissues....
